Beatrice Antonioni

Beatrice Antonioni

Graduated with top marks and honors at the age of sixteen under her father’s guidance, Francesco Antonioni, soon after accomplished her Post Graduate Degree both in violin and chamber music at Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia-Roma.She continued her Postgraduate studies with Nathan Milstein, Remy Principe in Italy and Henryk Szering in Paris and Switzerland.Since a very early age Beatrice started her successful solo career debuting with the Ludwig Van Beethoven violin concerto under Conductor Lorin Maazel and with Johannes Brahms violin concerto under Conductor Paul Van Kempen. Her London debut atQueen Elizabeth Hall was well acclaimed with a full audience. Concorso Internazionale Paganini-Genoa 4th prize winner and first prize winner at Francesco Geminiani-LuccaVittorio Veneto-Citta’ di Venezia, Became worldwideknown as a soloist, having performed with the most prestigious National and International Music Festivals, recording for Radio and Television in Italy and abroad. She performed in several countries as a solist, invited to play in the most prestigious venues in Italy, USA, South America, Mexico, Switzerland, France, Algeria, Holland, Poland, Israel, Belgium, Netherlands, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Russia and Turkey. has been soloist with I Solisti Aquilani Orchestra for over ten years, recording the complete works of Antonio Vivaldi Violin Concertos. She further recorded several other works for CM and PDU and the live-recording of Karol Szymanowsky Second Violin Concerto for Edizioni Paoline as well as Giuseppe Tartini Violin Concertos for Don Giovanni Editions. Beside her solo career Beatrice Antonioni has been a dedicated and successful pedagogue, inspiring a number of young musicians through her valuable violin and chamber music knowledge, having a particular dedication and predisposition in communicating with young violinists. In 1975 she was appointed as a Permanent Professor at Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia-Roma where she worked till 1993, and from 1994 she has been Honorary Professor atFondazione Santa Cecilia Music Academy-Rome and ARTS Academy-Rome. She was also invited as Professor at Accademia Pescarese in 1990 and gave several Materclasses and Workshops in Italy and abroad. style=”font-size: small;”>She has been a Jury member at the most prestigious National and International Competitions as such as Niccolò Paganini-Italy, Rodolf Lipizier-Italy, Postacchini-Italy, George Enescu-Rumania and many others. Massimo Quarta, first prize winner at the Niccolò Paganini International Competition-1991, was one of her former students and several other pupils have been awarded national and international prizes. She plays a 1741 Montagnana, a favorite violin used for long time by the famous Gioconda De Vito and a 1680 Stradivari named D’Annunzio-Baccara.

I had the privilege to study with Beatrice Antonioni at Accademia Musicale Pescarese- Scuola Superiore di Musica. Beatrice Antonioni, one of the finest Italian woman pedagogue, has had an enormous impact on my violin playing. Her Bach and Paganini teaching has inspired me to dedicate more time to this repertoire than I would have done. Already a child prodigy playing Brahms concerto at the age of 16 under Lorin Maazel, Beatrice was 4th Prize Winner at Paganini Competition at the age of 22. Her father Francesco Antonioni was her first teacher. A pupil of Henrich Szeryng, Nathan Milstain and Remy Principe, Beatrice particular teaching artistic side, has always been the beautiful expressive sound accompanied by a natural playing. Very attentive and caring at all times she was capable to inspire young students, eachone with his own potential. One of her best student has been Massimo Quarta, Paganini 1st. Prize winner. She played a violin Montagnana-1741 and a 1680 -Stradivari “D’Annunzio-Baccarà”. Beatrice Antonioni was member of National and International Violin Competitions such as Paganini, Enescu, Lipizer amongst others, has been Professor at Accademia di Santa Cecilia and at present teaches at Arts Academy in Rome and at Accademia Jacopo Napoli International Summer Courses were I am so praud to be her assistant.

Emanuel Hurwitz

Biography

  • Born 1919 in London, England
  • Died November 19, 2006
A violinist’s violinist, Emanuel Hurwitz is one of Britain’s most accomplished chamber musicians. He founded and served as co-leader of several important ensembles and has also had an extensive career as an educator and symbol to young musicians throughout the world. This doesn’t mean that anyone has learned to spell his name, however. He is frequently identified as “Emmanuel,” a mistake that has extended to many album liner notes, concert programs and college bulletins. It has even led to speculation that there are two violinists involved in maintaining his incredibly busy schedule.
He has been associated with the Royal Academy of Music in London for decades as a teacher, and also received his early training there. Hurwitz was part of the generation of British classical musicians most profoundly affected by the second World War. Maintaining a consistent level of study or having the opportunity to train in established orchestras or chamber ensembles were hardly priorities for society at large in the aftermath of such devastation. Many of the British classical orchestras were either temporarily or permanently defunct. Musicians and music college students such as Hurwitz were often drafted and wound up playing with military bands. Following the war, one way Hurwitz filled in his schedule and created income was by performing light music and in gypsy orchestras. It could hardly have seemed insulting since one of his violin heroes,Alfredo Campoli, had done exactly the same thing. As did some of Hurwitz’s peers: on a given night he might be sitting next to players such as Jack Rothstein or James Blades in a so-called salon orchestra.
This isn’t to say that he neglected his classical ambitions. He founded the Hurwitz String Quartet and began more than 20 years as leader of the English Chamber Orchestra, with whom he frequently appeared as soloist and conductor. During this time he was a co-founder and leader of the importantMelos Ensemble, consisting of a pool of about a dozen musicians performing the neglected repertoire for enlarged chamber ensembles and creating an important discography of recordings including many premieres. He spent two seasons as leader of the New Philharmonia Orchestra under Otto Klempererand Carlo Maria Giulini, sometimes directing the orchestra himself. For 11 years beginning in 1970 he was leader of the Aeolian String Quartet, touring and recording extensively, the latter word certainly not an exaggeration, as this discography includes the complete 22-CD set of Haydn string quartets, an item that has caused many a classical fan to overextend credit card limits.
As an educator he has established his own chamber music course and summer school in his native England. His teaching is certainly not limited to the UK, as he maintains a busy schedule of master classes and seminars from the Austrian Alps to the Canadian Rockies. Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide

 Manny Hurwitz
What I mostly remember of Manny is how much I enjoyed going to the lessons. His expertise was making everything sounding times and times better in a way that one could pactice only what relevant, saving time and effort.Manny has completed my musicianship in a way that I will never forget. There were no borders between technique and music and both would be explored in an infinite varity of ways. For each style each work an “infinite world”.This opened my view to approach a direction of continuous research. Hurwitz has been capable to inspire me to teach while encouraging me to perform and to take responsibilities as an orchestral leader.I had the opportunity to ask him several questions about music teaching and students’ progress: once I particularly asked Manny “Why do students with sthe same abilities, taught with the same care, progress at different speeds. His reply was that ” the most talented students do not only practise what they have been told, indeed they add their own research and ideas to improve”.
